Instagram Gift Cards & Food Orders

Updated: Apr 26

Calling all small businesses, food outlets and restaurants - this one's for you. Let your customers buy gift cards or make food orders from your Instagram profile and stories using new stickers and action buttons.

Do you run a small business, food outlet or restaurant? If so, listen up! Instagram has launched some brand new features, which can instantly benefit your business and help you to keep trading during these uncertain times.

The latest features allow businesses to add gift and food stickers to their stories giving customers the ability to either purchase gift cards or make food delivery orders. They have also added an “order food” action button, which can be added to a business or creator profile. The features use partner sites to connect small businesses with their customers and could be a game changer for those currently struggling to reach their customers.

Here’s an explanation of the new Insta features and how they can help restaurants, food outlets and small businesses to survive the COVID-19 lockdown.

Instagram Food Order Stickers and Food Order Buttons

Food order stickers within stories and food order buttons have been available in the USA and Canada for a couple of weeks and now we’re pleased to say they are available to use in the UK. They allow customers to place a food order (for collection or delivery) by linking them directly to a food delivery partner e.g. Uber Eats or Deliveroo.

In order to qualify to use these features you will need to have either a business or creator account (if you are currently using a personal Instagram account you can quickly convert it to a business account via the app). You will also need to set up your business with one of the partner sites, at the time of writing the options in the UK are either Deliveroo or Uber Eats. Set up instructions are available via their websites.

So how do these new Instagram features work in practice? Let’s take a look…

Order Food From Instagram Stories Sticker:

By adding an order food sticker to your Instagram Stories you can allow your customers to order food directly through your partner site (either Uber Eats or Deliveroo) by tapping on the sticker within the story.

To add an “Order Food” sticker to your Instagram stories follow these steps:

1. Select or take a photo or video to upload to your story

2. Click on the square smile emoji at the top of the screen

3. Select the “FOOD ORDERS” sticker

4. Select your chosen food partner from the list (you must set up your partner account first)

5. Add the website URL your business uses to link to the food order service you have selected

6. Click “done”

7. Move the food orders sticker to where you would like it to appear on your story.

8. You can tap on the sticker to change its colour

9. Now share your story

Note: only one food order sticker can be shared per story and viewers can re-share your Food Orders sticker to their own story.

Order Food Using Instagram Order Food Action Button:

You can now add an action button to your profile which lets customers place a food order through your selected partner (either Uber Eats or Deliveroo).

To add an order food button follow these steps:

7. Click “done”

After completing these steps your business will now be able to take food orders via your Instagram profile.

Instagram Gift Card Stickers and Action Buttons

You can now set up gift cards via Instagram as a way for your customers to support your business. These can be set up in the same way as food orders with either a gift card button on your Instagram profile or by using a gift card sticker within your Instagram stories. When someone clicks the gift card button on your Instagram profile or the gift card sticker on your stories they’ll be directed to your gift card partner’s website to buy your gift cards. As with food orders you must have either an Instagram Business Account or an Instagram Creator account. If you are currently using a personal account and would like to use these new Instagram features simply convert your account into either a Business or Creator profile.

At the time of writing available partners are: Kabbage, LoyLap, Raise, Square, Toast and Yiftee. You must first choose a gift card partner and set up an account before you will be able to use the Instagram Gift Cards feature on your profile or in your stories (individual instructions on how to do this are available via each of their websites).
